If You Still Have the Chance...Go.

Last Sunday morning, on Father's Day, I woke up with something I couldn't shake.
I had an unexpected week off from work, and one thought kept running through my mind...
Go see Dad.
He's about to turn 85, and opportunities like this don't come around very often. We always think there will be another holiday, another visit, another chance. But the older our parents get, the more we realize that time is the one thing we can never get back.
Less than an hour later, I had packed a bag, loaded Pebbles into the car, and started the drive to North Carolina.
It was a long drive, but one filled with reflection. I thought about all the Father's Days we had celebrated over the years, my childhood, my sisters and me growing up, and the incredible life my mom and dad built for our family.
When I finally arrived, the look on my dad's face made every mile worth it.
The week wasn't filled with extravagant plans. It was filled with something even better—time.
We picked blueberries together. We cooked dinner. We laughed. We shared stories that I'd heard before but appreciated even more this time. We reminisced about Mom, about raising three daughters, about the ups and downs of life, and about how quickly the years have passed.
Some of my favorite moments were simply sitting and talking.
Then, just when I thought I had surprised him...
He surprised me.
He decided to pack a bag and come back to New Jersey with me.
Those hours in the car became some of the most meaningful conversations we've had in years. We talked about life today, how each of us got to where we are, where we're headed, and what the future might look like. This past year has been one of the biggest years of change in my life—a story for another day—but somehow those conversations brought everything into perspective.
Once we got back to New Jersey, I wanted to show him pieces of the life that shaped all of us.
We visited Point Pleasant Beach, where my parents raised our family. We drove by the first house he bought on Washington Avenue. We walked the beach, visited his favorite pizza place, and of course... no trip would ever be complete without Hoffman's Ice Cream.
We even stopped to watch a hot air balloon being inflated. Flying in one still isn't his cup of tea, and that's perfectly okay. I was just happy we could share another new memory together.
Then came one more surprise.
When my children found out Grandpa was in New Jersey, they both changed their plans to come spend time with him.
Watching three generations together filled my heart in a way that's hard to describe.
As I looked around, I couldn't help but think of Mom.
She was always so proud of our family. I know she would have loved every minute of this week. I felt her in our conversations, in our laughter, in the stories we shared, and in the love that surrounded all of us.
This week also marked one year since I changed the direction of my entire life. Looking back, I realized something.
Some of life's biggest milestones aren't measured by promotions, moves, accomplishments, or material things.
They're measured by moments.
A drive you almost didn't take.
A conversation you'll never forget.
An ice cream cone on a warm summer day.
A walk on the beach.
A hug.
A laugh.
A memory made with the people you love.
If this week reminded me of anything, it's this...
Don't wait.
Make the drive.
Take the trip.
Ask the questions.
Listen to the stories.
Take the pictures.
Spend the time.
Because one day, those ordinary moments will become the memories you treasure most.
Dad, thank you for giving me a week I'll carry with me for the rest of my life.
I love you.
And Mom... I know you were right there with us every step of the way. ❤️
